NEW DELHI: The Maldives government extended its 15-day emergency by another 30 days on Monday evening, a day before India released a strong statement demanding the restoration of democracy in the troubled archipelago.

On Tuesday morning, a Ministry of External Affairs release said, “The State of Emergency declared in Maldives on 5 February 2018 comes to an end this evening. It is our expectation that the Government of Maldives will not be seeking extension of the State of Emergency so that the political process in Maldives can resume with immediate effect.”

“This is indeed strange. Our Embassy in Male would have known about the extension and informed Delhi, no matter how late in the evening,” said a former Indian diplomat. “If it was deliberately released despite knowing about the extension, it could be because we hoped that the parliament would reject it today, or that we reject it altogether.”

“After the revocation of the Emergency, democratic institutions including the judiciary should be allowed to function independently... The order issued by the Supreme Court of Maldives on 1 February 2018 should be implemented in letter and spirit. It is important that Maldives quickly returns to the path of democracy...,” the release added.

The Emergency expired on Tuesday. On Monday evening, the Parliamentary Standing Committee voted to extend it by another 30 days, while “easing Constitutional restrictions”, said a release on the Maldives President’s website. The Majlis, or Parliament, widely seen as a rubber stamp, approved it on Tuesday.

Opposition MP Eva Abdullah said on Twitter, “President Yameen does not have the Constitutionally mandated quorum for Parliamentary ratification of the State of Emergency… State of Emergency is illegal. All acts invoking State of Emergency invalidated.” According to the President of Maldives website, the emergency had been extended the day before.
