Teen attempts suicide by consuming concrete in West Bengal

The victim's life was saved and he is recovering after a team of 10 doctors removed 2 kg of concrete from his stomach in a successful surgery in West Bengal's Burdwan.

KOLKATA: A 19-year-old Jharkhand resident attempted suicide by consuming concrete after his father scolded him for lack of attention to idol making, their traditional occupation. However, the victim's life was saved and he is recovering after a team of 10 doctors removed 2 kg of concrete from his stomach in a successful surgery in West Bengal's Burdwan on Thursday.

Bimal Pal, a resident of Babudaha in Pakur district of Jharkhand, was scolded by his father Dhiren Pal on June 23 for not assisting him in idol making and whiling away his time. Saddened by the rebuke, Bimal consumed cement, plaster of Paris and a fragment of rags which formed a lump and caused him pain.

Bimal was first rushed to a local hospital in Pakur and then brought to Rampurhat block hospital in Birbhum district of West Bengal from where he was shifted to Burdwan Medical College and Hospital in Purba Burdwan district.
