IMD issues alert for heavy rainfall in central India

While one-third of the country is reeling under rain deficit, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued alert for heavy rainfall in central India on Tuesday.

NEW DELHI: While one-third of the country is reeling under rain deficit, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued alert for heavy rainfall in central India on Tuesday.

The IMD has issued a forecast for extremely heavy rainfalls at isolated places over Konkan, Goa, West Madhya Pradesh and south Gujarat Region for next two days.

Besides, heavy rains are expected at few places over coastal Karnataka and Kerala; Saurashtra, Uttarakhand, East Rajasthan, East Madhya Pradesh and South Interior Karnataka, at isolated places over Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Madhya Maharashtra and Vidarbha.

The state-wise rainfall distribution, however, shows a differential distribution of rain within states — with some districts receiving below average rainfall while some receiving surplus rainfall.

Of the three regions — Peninsular, central and east — dependent mainly on monsoon for agriculture, Odisha and northeast have received below normal rainfall.
