Militants attack army camp in Jammu and Kashmir

Militants attacked an army camp in Jammu and Kashmir's Bandipora district on Tuesday evening, sparking of a gunfight, police said.

SRI NAGAR: Militants on Tuesday evening attacked army camp and police station at Hajin area of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district. Sources said a group of militants simultaneously attacked the Army camp and the police station at Hajin area of Bandipora late evening. They said the militants lobbed grenades and fired from AK-47 rifles towards the Army camp and the police station, which are located in the same area. The fire was returned by the security personnel and the area rattled with heavy gunfire and blasts. A police official said firing at Hajin has stopped.

He said the area was cordoned by security personnel, who have launched a cordon and search operation there. Defence spokesman in Srinagar, Colonel Rajesh Kalia said there was standoff attack by militants on Hajin army camp. He said it was not a fidayeen attack but a stand off. “Our men also retaliated.” Sources said militants have escaped from the area after the twin attacks.

The residents of the area, especially the youth, took to roads and chanted profreedom, pro-Pakistan and promilitant slogans. In Sopore area of Baramulla district, an Army vehicle was damaged in an IED explosion by militants. No casualties were reported. The militants triggered the blast at Yemberzal Wari in Sopore area while an Army vehicle was passing through the area.
