Santragachi accident: Railways announces Rs 5 lakh for victims' kin, Rs 1 lakh for seriously injured

NEW DELHI: Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured, Railways Minister Piyush Goyal has announced an exgratia of Rs 5 lakh for those killed, Rs 1 lakh to the seriously injured and Rs 50,000 to those with minor injuries.

Offering his condolence to the families of victims of the overcrowding accident at Santragachhi, Kolkata, Goyal announced the compensation after the tragedy on Tuesday evening.

''Ex gratia compensation of Rs 5L will be given to kin of the deceased, Rs 1L to the seriously injured & Rs 50,000 to those with minor injuries. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured,'' office of Mr Goyal tweeted.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who along with Chief Secretary, State Director General of Police and other senior State Government officials rushed to the spot, announced a compensation of Rs Five Lakh to the bereaved families and Rs 50,000 to the injured.

She said two persons were killed in the stampede, while 12 were undergoing treatment of whom the condition of one was stated to be critical.
