Value your employees

In startups, just like our life, we have to deal a lot with people.

CHENNAI: In startups, just like our life, we have to deal a lot with people. But in startups it becomes even more crucial as a bad people manager might soon lose out most of his employees. Here are some tips:
Appreciate in public

Some of your employees will go an extra mile and create much more impactful contributions to the business. It is very important to recognize all such contributions publicly. This will let the employees know what kind of impact you’re really looking for and soon the entire team will start working towards it. The employee who is appreciated will also find that special treatment motivating.

Criticize in private

While some employees will definitely create positive impact, some will inadvertently create a negative one. How do you deal with them? While some corporates still work with this business culture, this is definitely not the right one for a startup (or any company). We should look at inspiration as a mode of change and not fear or humiliation. And the biggest way to drive this is to talk to your employee in private. Let him know what wrong he did and what has been the consequence and how can he rectify it in the future.

Give personal time to each employee

Employees love when they get personal time from the founders. This gives them opportunity to not just showcase what they have done but also talk of future plans and get inspired by your strategy and vision. This helps in building trust and fostering positivity.

Plan team-building events

It is important for the team not just to be close to you but also close to each other. Because if they are not, they won’t understand other person’s perspective in a situation and can create unnecessary tension. It is important that everyone knows each other and understands what their roles are. The best way to accomplish this is a team event. Celebrate your little accomplishments with a team dinner or a movie. Plan festive celebrations together or an activity.

Communicate vision and accomplishments

The two things that thrill anyone about your startup is your past and your future. By past I mean the accomplishments that startup has achieved and by future I mean the milestones it plans to hit. Let your employees know every time you hit a milestone so that they can also feel the pleasure of being on a startup ride. Also let them know of what future beholds for you all.
