United Nations, Dec 7 (PTI) US President Donald Trump's"unilateral and provocative" decision to recognise Jerusalemas the capital of Israel will further embolden Tel Aviv'sillegal policies, aggravate the tensions and destabilise theregion, the Palestinian Authority warned today.

In an identical letter to the president of the UN GeneralAssembly and the UN Security Council, Permanent ObserverMission of Palestinian Authority called on the world body toact urgently to "avert the further destabilization of thisextremely volatile situation", which poses a threat tointernational peace and security.

A clear message must be conveyed reaffirming theapplicable laws and resolutions and opposing this unilateraland provocative decision, which will further embolden Israel'sillegal policies and measures in the city and the rest of theOccupied Palestinian Territory, said Feda Abdelhady-Nasser,the Deputy Permanent Observer of Palestinian Authority here.

"These developments totally contradict the ongoingefforts to create the conditions necessary for any meaningfulnegotiations for a peaceful solution," the letter said.

Any party undertaking such actions undermines its ownrole in the pursuit of peace, and those concerned with thepromotion of peace cannot reasonably condone such actions, theletter warned.

"We call on all States to be firm in their rejection ofthese actions and in their non-recognition of this unlawfulsituation," Abdelhady-Nasser said.

Claiming that Trump's decision is "in contravention ofSecurity Council resolutions and the longstandinginternational consensus in this regard", the PalestinianAuthority said the international community must reaffirm itsclear, legal position on the status of Jerusalem, affirm itsrejection of all violations of that status by whomever andwhenever, and demand that this decision be rescinded.

"In light of the extremely regrettable decision announcedby the American President, we call on the Security Council toaddress this critical matter without delay and to act swiftlyto uphold its responsibilities and the integrity and authorityof its resolutions," the letter said.

According to the Palestinian Ambassador, the impact ofsuch provocations cannot be underestimated, nor can thesignificance and sensitivity of Jerusalem to the Palestinianpeople, Muslims and Christians, and to all Arabs and Muslimsworldwide.

"A comprehensive, just and lasting solution to thequestion of Palestine cannot be achieved without a just andlasting solution to the question of Jerusalem. Furthermore, the historic status quo at AlHaram Al-Sharif must bepreserved as a matter of priority and urgency," it said.

Any decisions or actions that disregard these fundamentallegal, political and religious dimensions of the question ofJerusalem can only aggravate already-heightened tensions anddestabilise of this situation, with far-reaching implicationsand consequences, the letter warned.

"This includes the exacerbation of religioussensitivities that risk transforming this solvable political-territorial conflict into a never-ending religious war, whichwill only be exploited by religious extremists, fuellingviolent radicalism and strife in the region and beyond," itsaid.
