New Delhi, Dec 7 (PTI) In a major development, leadingexport control regime Wassenaar Arrangement today decided toadmit India as its new member.

The decision was taken at the grouping's plenary meetingin Vienna.

The grouping said India will be its 42 member state assoon as the necessary formalities are completed.

"Wassenaar Arrangement (WA) participating states reviewedprogress of a number of current membership applications andagreed at the plenary meeting to admit India which will becomethe arrangement's 42 participating state as soon as thenecessary procedural arrangements for joining the WA arecompleted," the grouping said in a statement at the conclusionof its plenary meeting.

An entry into the export control regime would enhanceIndia's credentials in the field of non-proliferation despitenot being a signatory to the Non Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
