Harare, Nov 15 (AFP) The US embassy in Zimbabwe todaywarned its citizens in the country to "shelter in place" dueto "ongoing political uncertainty" as the crisis threateningPresident Robert Mugabe's government deepened.

"As a result of the ongoing political uncertainty throughthe night, the Ambassador has instructed all employees toremain home (Wednesday)," the embassy in Harare said in astatement.

"The embassy will be minimally staffed and closed to thepublic... US citizens in Zimbabwe are encouraged to shelter inplace until further notice."The British foreign office earlier said it was "aware ofreports of military vehicles moving on the outskirts ofHarare" and said it was monitoring the situation closely.

Several armoured vehicles were seen driving down mainroads outside the Zimbabwean capital yesterday, as tensionerupted between Mugabe's regime and the military that has beena key buttress to his 37-year reign.

In an incendiary statement, Mugabe's ZANU-PF partyaccused army chief General Constantino Chiwenga of"treasonable conduct" for challenging Mugabe over the recentsacking of the vice president.

The public dispute has presented a major test of whether93-year-old Mugabe, who has ruled since independence fromBritain in 1980, still has a firm grip on power. (AFP)AJR.
