Mumbai, Nov 24 (PTI) Engineers from the Indian Army havestarted work on three foot-overbridges (FOBs) at suburbanstations in Mumbai after the Railways gave necessaryapprovals, a senior official said today.

The Army engineers have begun piling and foundation workfor FOBs at Elphinstone Road on the Western Railway, andCurrey Road and Ambivli on the Central Railway after obtainingnecessary approvals from the transport PSU, said the Railwayofficial.

The official said the permission from the Commissioner ofRailway Safety (CRS) for the FOB at Elphinstone Road wasexpected "any moment".

He said the General Arrangement Drawing (GAD) of theElphinstone Road FOB was submitted by the Army engineersyesterday.

The Railways and Army have jointly set January 31, 2018as the deadline to construct the three FOBs, including the oneat Elphinstone Road, where 23 people were killed in a stampedeon September 29.

The under-construction bridge at Elphinstone is anextension of the current north-end FOB at Parel station andwill land at the west side of the Elphinstone Road station. Itis estimated to cost Rs 11 crore, officials said.

Railway Minister Piyush Goyal, Defence Minister NirmalaSitaraman and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis hadvisited the Elphinstone Road station a few weeks ago andannounced the January 31 deadline for completing the threeFOBs. PTI APM BNM RSYRCJ.
