New Delhi, Oct 13 (PTI) A petition of a woman, who lost anine-month old foetus in her womb, against the dilapidatedconditions in the city hospitals, today prompted the DelhiHigh Court to seek the responses of the Centre and the Delhigovernment.

A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice CHari Shankar issued notice to Ministry of Health and FamilyWelfare, Directorate of Health Services and five Delhigovernment-run hospitals asking them to respond in four weeks.

The petitioner, a resident of north Delhi's KarawalNagar, said on December 14, 2015, she was admitted to a citygovernment hospital with high blood pressure in her ninthmonth of pregnancy.

She claimed that due to the unhealthy environment in thehospital ward, which was smelly and had beds infested withcockroach and rats, her condition deteriorated and she losther foetus. It was alleged that the dead foetus remained inher womb and was removed by doctors after three days.

The petition sought direction to the governments to takeeffective steps to "immediately resurrect the dangerouslydilapidated health system in the hospitals run by them."It also sought utilisation of funds to infuse instantcourse correction, prevention of health hazards to thousandsof citizens and ensure immediate medical attention andtreatment to patients in real need.

The bench fixed the matter for hearing on February 6 nextyear.

The petition sought directions to the Delhi Police toinvestigate the "misappropriation of huge medical fundsentrusted to the concerned authorities/persons ensuingcrippling dearth of medical facilities and infrastructure.""Large number of patients reposing trust over citygovernment hospitals are poor even to buy the life savingdrugs. As majority of these medicines are very costly andhence not easily available to the poor patients this clearlyfalls foul of their fundamental rights to live," it said. PTIPPS AG SKV HMPARC.
