Baghdad, Jan 14 (AP) Iraq's prime minister says he willlead a "cross-sectarian" list in national elections proposedfor May, hoping to build off last year's victory against theIslamic State group.

In a statement issued yesterday, Haider al-Abadi says hisVictory Alliance will "boost the country's integrity andnational sovereignty, correct mistakes and achieve justice andequality for all Iraqis." He says the "miracle of victory andunity must lead to a new and brighter era."Al-Abadi, who comes from Iraq's Shiite majority, assumedoffice in 2014, weeks after IS stormed across northern andcentral Iraq. Since then, Iraqi forces backed by a US-ledcoalition have gradually retaken all the territory once heldby the Sunni extremists.

Iraq's Cabinet has proposed elections for May 12, a datethat awaits final parliamentary approval. (AP)UZM.
