New Delhi, Jan 14 (PTI) City-based Rajiv Gandhi CancerInstitute & Research Centre is planning to add 200 beds in itsexisting super-speciality hospital by April 2019 at aninvestment of about Rs 200 crore, a senior official has said.

The hospital currently has 302 beds, eight major andthree minor operation theatres to provide tertiary cancer careto the patients.

"We will be adding 200 more beds by April 2019 as we arein the process of expansion. We will also be adding six moreoperation theatres during this period," Rajiv Gandhi CancerInstitute & Research Centre (RGCIRC) CEO D S Negi told PTI.

The investment for adding 200 beds will be about Rs 200crore as usually one bed requires expenditure of Rs one crore,he added.

When asked about how the expansion would be funded, Negisaid: "It will be through internal accruals. We have somesavings as the surplus income the hospital generates and thatwill be ploughed back in its infrastructure development".

The aim is to provide cancer patients affordable care ofinternational standards, he added.

The institute has also tied up with US based Fox ChaseCancer Centre that provides access to their medical expertiseand advance care facilities.

Apart from the main hospital, Rajiv Gandhi CancerInstitute & Research Centre also has an extension centre inSouth Delhi with 27 beds, primarily catering to day-carepatients and emergency services, Negi said.

Founded in 1996, Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute & ResearchCentre is a unit of not for profit Indraprastha CancerSociety. It provides super specialised tertiary care servicesin medical, surgical and radiation oncology. PTI AKTBAL.
