Mumbai, Jan 22 (PTI) With just two days left for therelease of "Padmaavat", the Mumbai police today promisedsecurity to the theatres that would show the controversialfilm in the backdrop of threats issued by certain groupsopposing its release.

The Mumbai Police will ensure that no law and orderissue is created and they will provide adequate security tothe theatres screening it, a top police official said.

The police will also provide protection to moviegoersand its makers, if necessary, he added.

The official said makers of the film today approachedthe police, seeking security at multiplexes where the SanjayLeela Bhansali-directed period drama will open on January 25.

Police personnel will be stationed at cinemas fromJanuary 24 to 26 to ensure the film releases smoothly and anyattempt to disrupt its screening is foiled, he said.

Some groups led by the Karni Sena, an organisation ofthe Rajput community, are opposing the release of the film,claiming it "distorts" historical facts, a charge rejected byits makers. They have threatened to disrupt its screening.

The Supreme Court had last week paved the way for thenationwide release of "Padmaavat" by staying the ban on itsscreening in Gujarat and Rajasthan.

However, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh today moved theapex court seeking recall of its January 18 order by which ithad allowed the controversy-ridden film to be released intheatres across India.

The film, starring Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor andRanveer Singh, is based on the saga of the 13th Century battlebetween Maharaja Ratan Singh of Mewar and Sultan AlauddinKhilji of Delhi.

The Karni Sena has accused filmmaker Sanjay LeelaBhansali of projecting queen Padmini of Chittorgarh in badlight and distorting history. PTI DC RSYSK.
