THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A mirror with ‘Are you smart?’ written across the top is a typical feature of police stations in the state, for personnel to check their appearance. Now the department seems to be asking the same question, but with regards to their educational qualifications. In an order issued by the State Police Chief, police personnel with a degree or postgraduate degree in streams like BTech, BE, M Tech, MCA, BCA, MBA, LLB, LLM, PhD, MPhil and PGDCA have been directed to report their qualifications with immediate effect. The aim is to tap effectively into the potential of its personnel to improve and streamline the service of the force.
Manoj Abraham, IG and nodal officer of the Cyberdome, noted the department has several divisions which can use the expertise of the several highly qualified personnel, which will help the force streamline its services and increase the effectiveness of the force.
One move in this direction is the department’s decision to equip every police station with a cyber crime investigation cell which requires at least five trained personnel, including cyber, forensic, and telecommunication experts.
When asked if their service would be made use in Cyberdome, the hi-tech centre for cybersecurity set up by the Kerala Police at the Technopark campus on a public-private partnership model, the IG said it requires highly trained and talented intellectual resources to handle technologies like Blockchain. For the time being, the department is planning to make use the technical expertise of its personnel in allied divisions of the police, he said.
Meanwhile, the state police have decided to bring various divisions, such as telecommunications, ICT, CCTNS hub, police data centre, R&D centre, cyber forensics and the police photography unit under one roof.
The department is planning to construct a Police Technology Centre on its 1-acre plot in Milk Colony in Thiruvananthapuram. A committee, with the ADGP SCRB, as chairman, has been formed to look into the suggestion and it will hold its first meeting at the Police Headquarters on August 1.
