Police Information Technology units to come up in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode

KOCHI: The Kerala Police are on a massive expansion spree of its Information Technology (IT) wing and will set up exclusive regional IT units in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode. The expansion is aimed at strengthening the IT wing of the police and make digital initiatives of the force more effective and efficient.

Police officers said the move is mainly aimed at making the state force less dependent on private parties and to make the IT wing of the state force self-reliant and more efficient when it comes to solving crimes.  
State Police Chief Loknath Behera has given sanction to set up the three regional IT wings with a total manpower of 45 police personnel.

As per the details, the Thiruvananthapuram regional unit will have the highest manpower of 21, while the Kochi and Kozhikode regional units will have 12 each. “The SP (ICT) will coordinate the work of the IT wings so as to attain intended technology achievements. He will also train the personnel and provide resources to them as per requirement,” an official communique from Behera said.

While the regional IT wing in Thiruvananthapuram will be headed by an officer in the rank of DySP, the Kochi and Kozhikode IT units will be headed by circle inspectors.

State police chief Loknath Behera said a process is on to develop projects like traffic camera integration, Document Management System, Learning Management System and CCTV installation across the state and the projects require efficient and dedicated personnel in the IT wing.

Apart from digital police kiosks, the state police will roll out digital platforms for storing, retrieving and processing all case files and investigation reports.

The state-of-the-art Document Management System (DMS) will ensure that no police records go missing and any document can be retrieved at the touch of a button.

The DMS will also have two key components — Knowledge Management System (KMS) and Learning Management System (LMS), enabling access to police records on sensational cases for training purpose and also help police officers in their investigation by referring to various investigation reports.
