India vs Australia: Of Smith, Bird and other creatures

A hard-fought series, where the visitors have played beyond expectations, reaches its climax.

New ball bowlers

The overhead conditions, unlike most Test playing venues in India, could help both Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood in achieving swing in the air and off the pitch. All three of their leading fast bowlers (including the injured Mitchell Starc) have been amongst the wickets and do not bet against that trend continuing.

Extra seamer a possibility

Nathan Lyon was a passenger at times in the third Test and given he is the more attacking option, the think tank could include Jackson Bird. The Bengal vs Railways Ranji match is a case to further that suggestion. Of the 40 wickets that fell, 39 were claimed by seamers.

Warner is due

The southpaw has so far scored sixteen 4s and one 6. While he has a poor record in Asia, he is the kind of batsman who is capable of hitting sixteen 4s and one 6 inside a session if he gets in. R Ashwin and R Jadeja have ensured that hasn't happened but stranger things have occured.

Captain courageous

The last few Oz captains talked up a big game but failed to replicate their talk on the field. Smith, though, has become the first Oz captain since Adam Gilchrist (who was a stand-in) to win a live test here. The batting averages while playing here speak for themselves. Michael Clarke (40.50), Ricky Ponting (26.48), Steve Waugh (47.36) and Mark Taylor (36.14) all struggled to varying degrees while facing the spinners. Smith? 59.11.
