Manohar defers decision to quit as ICC chairman, to stay on till June

CHENNAI: Shashank Manohar on Friday reversed his decision to step down as chairman of the ICC, agreeing to stay on till the annual conference in June instead.

The U-turn comes following a ICC board resolution last week requesting him to stay in office.
Earlier this month, Manohar's move to quit as chairman had taken the cricketing world by surprise, with many linking the decision to BCCI gaining enough support to block the constitutional reforms he spearheaded. But with the world body's board fully behind him, Manohar has agreed to stay on, albeit temporarily.

“I respect the sentiments expressed by the directors and the confidence they have reposed in me. In light of this, and although my decision to step down due to personal reasons has not changed, I am willing to continue as chairman,” he said.

“I have duty to work with my colleagues to enable a smooth transition and continue our work on the governance of the ICC.”

Cricket Australia chief David Peever said: “This is a clear indication that whilst the board may not yet agree on the detail of our reform process, we are committed to the overarching philosophies of it. We all believe that Shashank is the man to see it through... and are delighted he has agreed to remain in post until completion of the 2017 Annual Conference where we can elect a successor.”
