CHENNAI: Syed Anwar Shazuli of ICF, Chennai, emerged champion on superior tie-breaks with seven points after the eighth and final round of the St Peter’s School’s 1st All-India Open FIDE rated chess tournament, held at St Peter’s International School, Kodaikanal here on Sunday. Shazuli will take home the trophy and a cash prize of `35,000. Sharing the top spot with Shazuli was local star Lakshmi Narayanan and Ram S Krishnan (BSNL Chennai) at 7 points apiece. Half a point behind were seven players which included top-seed N L o k e s h a n d I M R Balasubramaniam. Final placings: 1-3: Syed Anwar Shazuli, MV Lakshmi Narayanan, Ram S Krishnan (7pts); 4-10: N Lokesh, SK Kanishk, R Balasubramaniam, R Anup Shankar, Y Saranya, KK Gowtham, B Vignesh (6.5 pts).

Adithya cracks 56

Adithya Manikandan’s 56 helped Prahlad B beat YSCA B by two wickets in the 48th all-India YSCA Trophy tournament. Brief scores: YSCA B 154/9 in 30 ovs (Balasubramani 3/40, Siddharth Games 3/61) lost to Prahlad B 155/8 in 28.4 ovs (Adithya Manikandan 56; S Thyagarajan 4/51, R Satish Kumar 4/38).
