Velavan Senthilkumar US bound to receive training

Goodbyes are always difficult. After spending your childhood in a city, the level of attachment and emotion will be high. Velavan Senthilkumar is feeling the same.

CHENNAI: Goodbyes are always difficult. After spending your childhood in a city, the level of attachment and emotion will be high. Velavan Senthilkumar is feeling the same.

Last season was spectacular for India’s newest squash sensation. After winning the junior British Open in January, the 19-year-old was approached by coaches from Columbia University.

On August 18, it will become reality. While two back-to-back defeats in finals is not morale boosting for someone who has just turned pro, Velavan is all smiles. After losing to Egypt’s Mohamed Elsherbini at the Parkview Open and the West Rand Open, both PSA world tour events held in South Africa, Velavan is excited for what’s ahead.

“Chennai is very dear to me. There are lots of friends and I will miss them. I am trying to make the most of my time here. I need to rest also. Training will start along with classes in Columbia. Hopefully, something better is waiting for me there,” Velavan told Express.

Having landed a day earlier, Velavan looked a little drowsy during the press meet of the Asian Senior Individual Championships starting on Wednesday. While jet lag was one of the reasons, the Salem lad mentioned that the two finals had a huge role to play.

“By the end of the second finals I almost had a physical breakdown. The matches were more intense. I didn’t expect to reach the finals. I just wanted to know where I stand, so that I can work on it. I’ve a lot to improve, especially on the physical side. Right now, I’m concentrating on the Asian Championships. I’m planning to take a two-month break to work on it. It’ll be transition period for me.”

Asked if he is bidding adieu to the Indian Squash Academy and coaches in Chennai, Velavan was quick to deny. “I’m not leaving this place. I’ll have lots of holidays and will train here when I come to Chennai. Also, I hope the university gives me special permission to attend trials for the national side,” he concluded.
