CHANDIGARH: The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Friday issued notice to the Haryana government on a plea by 2010 Commonwealth Games gold medallist boxer Manoj Kumar that he be appointed as a DSP on the basis of his achievements.

Justice G S Sandhawalia issued notice to the state's home department, the chief secretary and DGP Haryana and posted the matter for hearing on August 29.

The boxer's counsel submitted that the London Olympics quarter-finalist had approached the state government on many occasions saying other players from the state were given such appointments in the past.

He alleged that he was being denied the DSP's post arbitrarily by the state government.

He sought a court direction to the Haryana government to appoint him as DSP. Kumar had fought a legal battle in 2014 after he was not included in the Arjuna awards list despite fulfilling the criteria. He was later given the award.
