HC seeks government stand on info commissioners’ posting

The Andhra Pradesh High Court on Wednesday asked for instructions of the state government with regard to appointments to the posts of state information commissioners.

Justice KC Bhanu was dealing with a writ petition seeking a direction to the government for completion of the process of appointments to the said posts under the RTI Act. He posted the matter for hearing to next week.

Petitioner advocates L Thanthiya Kumari, V Venkateshwarlu, S Imtiaz Ahmed and chairperson of Nova group of colleges Vijaya Nirmala pointed out that the governor had appointed only four members -- C Madhukar Raj, S Prabhakar Reddy, P Vijay Babu and M Ratan -- as state information commissioners as against eight vacancies.

Though the Selection Committee consisting of the chief minister, deputy CM and the leader of the opposition had recommended appointment of eight members to the posts, the appointments did not happen.

The authorities concerned neither issued any letter or proceedings rejecting their candidature nor assigned any reasons to substantiate why they were not given appointments as information commissioners. They wanted the court to direct the authorities to complete the said process by considering their cases to the posts.
