20 sick after drinking toddy

More than 20 persons were hospitalised after consuming adulterated toddy in Nizamabad town on Wednesday. The condition of the victims is said to be stable, but more victims are making beeling to the government general hospital since afternoon.

According to sources, about 20 persons from Gajulpeta, Arsapalli, Hamalvadi, Kotagalli, and Dubba areas in Nizamabad town had reportedly bought the toddy on Tuesday, considering closure of all the liquor and toddy shops on Wednesday on the occasion of Independence Day.

Soon after, they had consumed the liquor on Wednesday morning, they started vomiting and had motion. They were, later, admitted to a government hospital. It is learnt that the victims consumed adultered toddy in excess.

By Wednesday evening, about 20 persons were admitted to the hospital, yet the excise officials remained inconclusive as to how many fell sick due to consumption of the adulterated toddy. They are also checking in other private hospitals for the victims.

Special teams have been sent to collect samples from various toddy shops in the town. It is also learnt that though the officials had taken several steps to close the liquor and toddy shops, a few of them located in areas such as Nagaram and Mirchi are still running.
