ASP accuses SP of helping ganja trade

Alleging that East Godavari district SP C M Trivikram Varma was obstructing his efforts to check illegal ganja transportation in Rampachodavaram region, his subordinate, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) B Naveen Kumar, on Monday, lodged a complaint against him for attempt to murder, harassment and obstruction of his duties.

Since the complaint was against an IPS officer, no case was registered but senior police officials have ordered an enquiry.

Kumar, an IPS officer of the 2008 batch, has been working as ASP (operations) there since five months. In his complaint, he alleged that Varma, a 2005-batch officer, was corrupt and was indulging in illegal transportation of ganja in the region. “Trivikram Varma, through his jeep driver Basava, who he retained even after getting promoted as SP, is engaging in illegal activity of transportation of narcotic substances,” Naveen Kumar told Express.

He said the SP was obstructing his efforts to put a stop to ganja smuggling, adding that when he seized 35 bags of ganja three months ago, he was forced to release them.

He also accused Varma of harassment and attempt to murder him. He said that when he had applied for a 10-day medical leave due to back pain, instead of sanctioning it, Varma had referred it to Medical Board. He sanctioned the leave only after the Board gave the clearance.

“Varma even threatened the doctors, asking them why they had given the clearance,” he alleged.

The ASP further alleged that there was an attempt to kill him. About a month-and-half ago, the ASP’s vehicle met with an accident. Kumar alleged that the SP had got someone to tamper with his vehicle. “I was on leave when the mischief with the vehicle took place. They tinkered with the steering rod which led to the mishap,” he alleged. Efforts to contact Varma proved futile.

However, Eluru range DIG, G Suryaprakash Rao said they have ordered an inquiry into the entire episode.
