HC admits plea against actors for award ‘misuse’

The High Court on Thursday admitted a writ petition seeking action against film actors Mohan Babu and Brahmanandam for alleged misuse of the Padma Shris given to them.

Justice P V Sanjay Kumar was dealing with the petition filed by BJP senior leader N Indrasena Reddy seeking annulment of the national award given to actor-producer M Mohan Babu and comedian Brahmanandam in 2007 and 2009 respectively.

The judge, before adjourning the matter, ordered notices issued to the Union Home Ministry, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and the two actors.

The petitioner contended that the CBFC should not have granted certificate to the controversial Telugu movie, Denikaina Ready, as the names of the two actors carried Padma Shri as a prefix in the film’s title sequence. The Supreme Court had held that the Padma Shri is not a title and ought not to be used as such. In case of non-compliance, the defaulter should forfeit the award.
