Though a strong earthquake has hit Japan’s eastern coast the officials say there is no threat of Tsunami to the country.
“Tsunami threat does not exist for India,” the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) bulletin said on Friday.
“The Indian Tsunami Early Warning Centre (ITEWC) and the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) is monitoring the changes in sea level near epicentral region and will report in case of tsunami threat,” the bulletin added.
The situation was normal in Nellore, Prakasam, Guntur and other coastal districts. However, the fishermen did not venture into sea on Thursday due to low pressure warning, they resumed fishing activity on Friday. In Guntur district, the locals said that the sea was normal and they did not receive any information about Tsunami.
People of Visakhapatnam also remained unperturbed to the rumours of tsunami hitting the east coast after the reports of Tsunami in Japan were flashed in the news channels. As usual, large number of crowds hit the Ramakrishna beach here on Friday evening. While a few came with friends, many were accompanied by their families. Asked if they were aware of the tsunami in Japan, many people drew a blank face. However, some were aware of the news but were confident that tsunami would not hit the Vizag coast.
“If that was the case, the police and other officials would have restricted us from entering the beach. Further, news channels would have flashed the news and radio jockeys might have warned people not to go to the beach,” said M Swetha, a student of GITAM University.
Though the sea has been rough over the last few days, no major changes in the sea level was reported on Friday, the officials said.
