House panel for better security along coast

The Parliamentary committee on home affairs will submit a proposal to the Union government on the basic infrastructure required for coastal security, its chairman M Venkaiah Naidu said on Thursday.

The committee has visited Duggarajapatnam and Sriharikota areas to study the security aspects. It first inspected the marine police station at Duggarajapatnam, where it reviewed the security services being provided by marine police.

Speaking on the occasion, Naidu said the committee had discussed the measures for preventing anti-national elements from entering the country through the sea route and also strengthening the marine police stations in terms of men, equipment and other facilities.

The committee would recommend to the Centre to provide adequate funds for strengthening security in coastal areas, Naidu said, adding it will stress on providing additional boats and other facilities to marine police.

The committee, later, visited SHAR centre where they studied the  facilities and discussed the security measures in place.
