As many as six corporators belonging Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who were sitting in protest in the GHMC council hall since Saturday, were taken into custody by Nampally police on Sunday morning. They were protesting against the postponement of ordinary general body meeting.

BJP floor leader in the GHMC, Bangari Prakash, along with other BJP corporators K Sahadev Yadav, Mettu Vaikuntam, K Uma Ramesh, Devara Deepa Karunakar and C Uday Kumar, who started the protest on Saturday morning, had lunch and dinner in the council hall and slept on the floor.

A large posse of policemen descended on the GHMC head office on the tank bund road on Sunday morning and physically lifted the corporators and took them to the BJP city office at Barkatpura and left them there.

The BJP has been protesting against Mayor M Majid Hussain declining to administer oath of office to BJP’s Langer Houz corporator C Uday Kumar, who was declared the winner after MIM corporator B Ravi Yadav was disqualified by the High Court in November last year.

Speaking to Express, Bangari Prakash said the mayor and the MIM party had been postponing the general body meeting for quite some time to avoid administering oath to the BJP corporator.

The 10th ordinary meeting of the GHMC, held on Saturday, was ended abruptly by the mayor without transacting any business.

Prakash said the MIM corporators created a din during the council meeting at the behest of the mayor and raised slogans praising Akabaruddin Owaisi and condemning the chief minister. Congress corporators too raised slogans against the MIM and praised the CM.

Prakash warned of serious consequences if the meeting was not convened again and conducted properly. The BJP expressed anger at the police for arresting its corporators when they are protesting peacefully.
