PUCL leader held for FB post on MLA

The Chirala police on Sunday arrested People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) state president Jaya Vindhyala for levelling serious allegations against Chirala MLA Amanchi Krishna Mohan on the social networking site Facebook.

K Raghuram Reddy, superintendent of police, Prakasam, told Express that the legislator had lodged a complaint with Chirala I Town Police on April 18 stating that Jaya Vindhyala had posted derogatory remarks against him and his family members on Facebook.

The police led by circle inspector Bhima Naik arrested her around 7 a.m. at her residence in Padmarao Nagar in Hyderabad on Sunday morning and shifted her to Chirala.

The police registered a case against Jaya under Section  66 A of Information Technology Act (for sending false and offensive messages through communication services).

The PUCL national executive, which met in Delhi, strongly condemned the arrest, calling it a vindictive act of the state police since Vindhyala had been exposing corruption of the Chirala MLA and other senior officials.
