Amidst reports of a new party emerging in Seemandhra, a few people from Vijayawada on Tuesday applied to the Election Commission seeking to register a political party, Samaikya Rashtra Samithi (SRS).

Party founder-president S Viswanadhan told reporters that his party will work for the cause of United Andhra Pradesh. “The party will work to keep the state united,” he said.

The SRS flag will bear the image of Potti Sriramulu, who laid down his life for a separate Andhra state, and will have the slogan “Aikyamatayame Mahabalam (unity is strength). Former IPS officer and noted social activist Kiran Bedi will unveil the party flag, he said.

This development acquires significance since for the last few days, there has been speculation that a new political party will be formed in the Seemandhra region.

Rajahmundry MLA R Surya Prakash Rao, Kamalapuram MLA G Veerasiva Reddy and Guntur MP Rayapati Sambasiva Rao have also been making statements that a new regional party is in the offing.

Interestingly, TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu, who is touring Seemandhara, has alleged that chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy was trying to float a new regional party to cash in on the Samaikyandhra movement.

“Irony is that the man (Kiran) who is unable to weild any influence in his own party is planning to set up a new political party”, remarked.
