VISAKHAPATNAM: Currency notes in Rs 500 denominations floating in a drain passing through the VUDA Mithilapuri Colony in the city created a flutter on Wednesday. But, the notes turned out to be fake ones.

On Wednesday morning, a news spread in the locality that two unidentified persons had dumped bundles of currency notes in the drain. People soon gathered near the drain and some of them entered into the water and start collecting the currency notes. But, the notes turned out to be fake ones.

PM Palem inspector K Lakshmana Murthy said they were suspecting that it might be a handiwork the gangs who circulate fake currency notes.

“They (the culprits) might have thrown the notes as those can no longer be circulated after demonetisation. Special teams have been deployed to identify the persons,” he said.
