Two people injured in fire at Satish Dhawan Space Centre

Two workers were injured, one of them grievously, in a fire that broke out at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Srikharikota in Nellore district.

NELLORE: Two workers were injured, one of them grievously, in a fire that broke out at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Srikharikota in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday.

Sources said the fire erupted  around 4 pm following a short circuit when the two workers were engaged in electrical maintenance work at the Sound Rocket complex. Fire safety officials immediately doused the blaze.

K V Krishnaiah, a technician who sustained serious burns on his face and hands, underwent treatment at the hospital on the space centre campus before being shifted to a private hospital in Chennai, while K Muniraja, a contract worker, was admitted in a hospital at Sullurpet.

Authorities at the space centre have ordered an inquiry into the incident.

A major fire accident on a segment of a Test Rocket Motor at the Solid Propellant Space Booster Plant (SPROB) at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre had claimed the lives of six persons, including an engineer, three technicians and two helpers, on February 23,  2004. Three others had sustained burns in the incident.
