Jaggaiahpet youth’s organs give new life to six

The organs of a brain dead youth from Jaggaiahpet in Krishna district were harvested and donated to six persons.

VIJAYAWADA: The organs of a brain dead youth from Jaggaiahpet in Krishna district were on Wednesday harvested and donated to six persons.

G Vamsi Krishna (29), a hardware engineer with Mandava Institute of Engineering and Technology was admitted to a private hospital after he complained of fever.

However, his condition worsened and he was shifted to Heart and Brain Institute in Vijayawada for better treatment on Monday. The doctors declared Krishna brain dead on Tuesday.

“After knowing the severity of my son’s health condition, I asked the hospital management to make arrangements for donating his organs and for the sake of people in need,” said G Venugopala Rao, Krishna’s father.

“The patient did not respond to medical care. He had suffered clotting of blood in head. He was declared brain dead due to hemorrhage,” said V Srinivas Reddy, a neurologist at the hospital.
On Wednesday, a team of doctors from Yashoda and Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad, led by heart surgeon and cardio thoracic surgeon A Gopala Krishna Gokhale from the Government General Hospital (GGH) harvested the engineer’s liver, eyes, kidneys and heart.

His liver was sent to Yashoda Hospitals, Secunderabad and heart to Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad, where it was transplanted onto a 29-year-old patient. The kidneys were sent to city-based Ayush hospital and NRI hospitals in Mangalagiri, Guntur district. The eyes were sent to Vasan Eye Care in the city, according to Andhra Hospitals chief paediatrician P V Rama Rao.

Recent organ donations in Vijayawada

Mulakala Padmavathi (39), went into coma after she suffered a severe brain haemorrhage in 2014. She was subsequently declared brain dead. Her organs were donated to four persons.
Thota Manikanta (22), a driver and resident of Ramavarappadu met with a severe accident on the Ring Road in 2015. Manikanta suffered severe head injuries and was rushed to Metro Hospital in a critical condition. A team of surgeons tried in vain to save his life. He was declared brain dead on March 6, 2015. His organs gave a new lease of life to eight.

Devabhakthuni Sudheer (22) a B.tech Student, went into coma after sustaining severe head injuries in an accident at Telaprolu in 2015. His organs were donated to four patients. Immabathuni Yedukondalu (50), a lorry driver, Singh Nagar, Vijayawada, was declared brain dead after an accident in May, 2016. His organs were also donated to others.
