VIJAYAWADA/GUNYUR: Days after Guntur Government Medical College student Sandhya Rani’s suicide, her broken-hearted husband, Ch Ravi, also a doctor, tried to take the extreme step at his residence in Miryalaguda on Wednesday. According to the police, Ravi tried to hang himself from the ceiling in his room. His brother, who arrived there in the nick of time, rushed him to a private hospital where his condition is said to be critical.

Ravi reportedly went into a depression following the untimely death of his wife, who committed suicide due to the alleged harassment by one of her professors, AVV Lakshmi, at the college. He works at a private children’s  hospital in Miryalaguda. His wife was a post-graduate student at the Guntur Medical College.

Sandhya Rani had injected herself with a high dose of anaesthesia and died four days ago while undergoing treatment. She reportedly wrote in her diary about the harassment by professor Lakshmi. Sandhya and Ravi were married less than a year ago and the former was allegedly denied leaves and burdened with additional work by the professor.

Sandhya’s classmates at the medical college staged a protest on Wednesday demanding the immediate arrest and suspension of professor Lakshmi and accused her of harassing them. They also took out a rally up to the district collectorate and the office of the superintendent of police where they submitted representations to the officials concerned.

When contacted, Guntur General Hospital superintendent DS Raju Naidu told Express that the incident had already been reported to the Director of Medical Education (DME) and further action will be taken as per their directions.

Meanwhile, the police have launched a massive hunt for professor Lakshmi who has been on the run ever since Sandhya Rani attempted suicide. Additional SP J Bhaskar Rao said special search parties have been deployed to track down the accused. She has sent a letter to the medical college principal seeking leave for one month.

The police traced her cellphone to Pullalacheruvu in Prakasam district, before she removed her SIM and threw it away.
