Boycott, protests take centre stage at GGH

Doctors allege that authorities made Dr Indira a scapegoat in connection with the death of a male infant in the hospital, demand revocation of her suspension

GUNTUR: Demanding the officials to revoke the suspension of assistant professor Dr. Indira, doctors of the Government General Hospital (GGH) in Guntur boycotted duties and staged a protest, on Thursday.

After congregating in front of the hospital Superintendent’s office, the doctors said that the authorities made Dr. Indira a scapegoat in connection with the death of a male infant.

Following the incident of the doctor at the labour room declaring a just born as dead and issuing a death certificate and later admitting the same infant in the NICU and the death of the baby while undergoing treatment, inviting widespread criticism over the functioning of government hospital, the health department officials suspended the duty doctor Indira in connection with the issue on Wednesday.

Resenting the same, the doctors at the hospital on Thursday boycotted all duties except the emergency services and demanded the authorities to revoke the suspension of the doctor.

After learning about the protest of doctors, the Director of Medical Education (DME) Dr. N Subba Rao came to the GGH from Hyderabad and appealed to the doctors to resume duties.

Though, the doctors demanded revoking the suspension of Dr. Indira immediately, the DME said that the suspension order will be in force until completion of the inquiry and only assured the doctors to expedite the inquiry, based on which the fate of the suspended doctor hangs.
