SRIKAKULAM: Stray dogs have killed a spotted deer near the government hospital in Patapatnam in Srikakulam district on Sunday morning when it had entered the village from the nearby forest in search of water.

According to locals, a spotted deer had ventured into the village in the early hours on Sunday. A pack of stray dogs had chased the deer on the streets before killing it. The villagers later found the dogs feasting on the dead animal following which they informed the forest officials.

Such instances are often reported during the summer from the villages close to the forest. However, this is the first time a deer ventured into the village even before the season commenced.

Patapatnam forest range officer MVS Soma Sekhar Rao said the department employees rushed to the spot on receiving the information and shifted the dead animal to the veterinary hospital for postmortem. After ascertaining the cause of death, the animal was cremated by the forest department staff.
