VISAKHAPATNAM: Two policemen who were out for night patrolling at Reddipalem village of Padmanabham Mandal in Visakhapatnam district were attacked by an auto-rickshaw driver with a knife, in the wee hours of Monday. The policemen sustained serious injuries and the condition of one is said to be critical.

Constable Ch Ashok Kumar and home guard G Appalaraju of Padmanabham Police Station were attacked when on the night beat at a junction near Reddipalem at around 1.30 AM on Monday. When the unsuspecting officers inquired the auto-rickshaw driver over his presence at the junction, they were attacked with a knife by the latter.

The policemen sustained severe injuries on their necks and other body parts. They are currently undergoing treatment in a hospital at Vizianagaram. The condition of Ashok Kumar is said to be critical.

According to sources, the auto-rickshaw driver has been detained in police custody and the cops are yet to ascertain whether he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the attack.

Padmanabham inspector YK Kishore Kumar has been tasked with further investigation in this regard.
