The Visakhapatnam police have found that marijuana (ganja) smugglers have adopted yet another new method to evade the law. On Tuesday morning, personnel of the Visakhapatnam Rural police district intercepted an oil tanker and checked its contents. They found 1200 kg of marijuana (ganja) being transported.

The tribal hills of Visakhapatnam, called the Agency area, are fertile grounds for ganja cultivation and a major sourcing location for smugglers in south India, particularly Chennai.

In Tuesday’s incident at Guttulaputta area of Paderu mandal in Visakhapatnam Agency, five smugglers were arrested with a consignment said to be of the street value Rs 50 lakh.

The smugglers procured the ganja from farmers in the interior areas of G K Veedhi, G Madugula and other mandals.

However, police received a tipoff about the courier and caught up with the oil tanker in the Guttulaputta area. Circle inspector K Appalanaidu of Paderu said it wasn’t yet known where the consignment was been transported to.
