TIRUPATI: A giraffe died when its neck got entangled in a rope on a tall neem tree where grass and leaves were tied to help the animal practice reaching its food at a height, on late Sunday night at SV Zoo Park here. The caretakers of the zoo found the animal dead on July 10, 2017, morning and reported the incident to the higher officials.

According to Tirupati Wild Life Circle Additional Principal Chief Conservator B K Singh, the death was due to an accident. “The giraffe whose neck got entwined in the rope could not wriggle out of it and subsequently died,” he said. But animal lovers did not buy the theory. They said that the animal had become weak due to various reasons, and the most important one being that it was feeling lonely in the absence of a female giraffe. “This is the only big animal in the zoo and we had requested the zoo authorities to appoint a qualified caretaker for it,” one veterinarian said.
