Contract teachers call for regularisation of services

Equal pay for equal work and pension scheme are the major demands

VIJAYAWADA: The Joint Action Committee of Andhra Pradesh State Universities Contract Teachers’ Association on Tuesday demanded the State Government to regularise the services of contract teachers and provide them job security. Addressing a press conference here, JAC president K Arjunudu said that nearly 15,000 contract teachers working in the universities are on the verge of losing their jobs. He reminded that Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu had come to power with the promise of providing new jobs. Now, the time has arrived to keep his promise and protect the interests of contract teachers in various universities.

Arjunudu made it clear that the JAC was not against recruiting new candidates for the vacant posts but it insisted that the jobs of its members be regularised and protected. Naidu should take a cue from his counterpart Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao who gave instructions to regularise all the contract workers including teachers in the State, he added.

JAC general secretary K Mallikarjuna Reddy said that the new screening test proposed by the government for fresh candidates would hamper the interests of experienced contract teachers who have been serving on par with permanent faculty for decades. He demanded a common government order (GO) to make all universities function in a uniform manner. Equal pay for equal work as well as pension scheme for the contract teachers should be introduced. Contract teachers from 13 universities across the State were also present at the news conference.
