Workers injured in fire at steel plant

Three contract workers received burn injuries after a minor fire broke out allegedly due to a gas leak at the SMS-1 of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) on Friday.

VISAKHAPATNAM: Three contract workers received burn injuries after a minor fire broke out allegedly due to a gas leak at the SMS-1 of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) on Friday. Among them, one is said to have received severe burns for he was very close to the place where the explosion occurred.
According to Steel Plant police station inspector P Naidu, primary information revealed that the contract workers were working on gas pipelines which broke, resulting in the gas leak which subsequently led to a minor fire.


Among the injured, 35-year old A Narayana suffered around 60 per cent burns, while the same for the rest was around 20 per cent. At present, all the injured are being treated in a corporate hospital and their condition is stated to be stable, police said.“The contract workers sustained burns due to small gas leakage in the mixer. Two persons have been admitted to the ESI hospital,” a communique issued by the steel plant authorities said.
