Andhra University best univ in Andhra Pradesh, three others make it to country’s top 100

Several educational institutions which had bagged spots on the prestigious list in 2017 did not make the cut this year.

VISAKHAPATNAM: Andhra University (AU) in Visakhapatnam, Sri Venkateswara University (SVU) in Tirupati, Koneru Lakshmaiah Education Foundation University (KLU) in Vaddeswaram and Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS), Tirupati, have made it to the HRD Ministry’s list of top 100 universities (overall category) in the country.

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) list which was released on Tuesday rated Indian Institute of Science, Benguluru, the best university in the country, followed by IIT-Madras and IIT-Bombay.

Several educational institutions which had bagged spots on the prestigious list in 2017 did not make the cut this year. Of the four institutions that made it to the top 100 in the overall category, AU was ranked 36, with a score of 50.39; SVU and Koneru Lakshmaiah Education Foundation University secured ranks 74 and 83 with scores of 43.44 and 42.78 respectively; while SVIMS, which scored 42.33 points, stood in the 89th position.

AU was ranked 69 in last year’s ratings, while SVU was 68th on the list.In the top universities category, AU was ranked 22 (score 50.39); SVU, 49 (43.44); KLU, 56; and SVIMS, 62.Two other universities — GITAM in Vizag and Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning in Anantapur secured the 85th and 92nd positions respectively in the category.

Last year, AU was ranked 43; SVU, 42 and JNTU in Kakinada, 99. JNTU didn’t make the cut in 2018.AU registrar V Uma Maheswara Rao attributed the university’s success to the efforts of the teaching and non-teaching staff. He said AU and the colleges affiliated would secure much better position next year.

“It might look that we have gone a step behind, but I think its just that others have moved a bit ahead of us. This year we were more concerned about getting funds,”  Sri Venkateswara University V-C A Damodaram said.

Top engineering colleges

KLU has been ranked 49 and AU College of Engineering, 65 in the top engineering colleges category. SVU, Sagi Ramakrishnam Raju Engineering College in Bhimavaram and University College of Engineering in Kakinada bagged ranks 71, 85 and 97. IIT-Madras, IIT-Bombay and IIT-Delhi secured the top three positions in the category.Silver Jubilee Degree College in  Kurnool and Andhra Loyola College in Vijayawada were positioned 35 and 56 in the category. Nine colleges from the state that made it to the list in 2017 have lost their places.

Elite management institutions

Institute for Financial Management and Research, Satyavedu, stood 34th on the NIRF list in the category, followed by KLU in the 46th position.AU College of Pharmaceutical Sciences was ranked 28 in the best pharmacy colleges category, along with Raghavendra Institute of Pharmaceuatical Education & Research Anantapur (39).None of the medical and architecture colleges in the country made it to the top 100.
