‘Andhra Pradesh lost Rs 455 crore for failing to start projects’

VIJAYAWADA: The state government has been unable to avail a Central Government Contribution of Rs 455.02 crore due to the non-starting of drinking water schemes. Despite completing preliminary works including investigation, surveys and the preparation of detailed project reports (DPRs), the non-commencement of works has resulted in the loss of central funds, depriving 2,981 habitations of safe drinking water.

Over 290 multi-village schemes (MVS) were sanctioned for an estimated cost of Rs 2,250.19 crore in Andhra Pradesh during 2006-16. However, 79 schemes costing Rs 443.47 crore did not begin despite the completion of preliminary works costing Rs 1.08 crore.

As per the Comptroller and Auditor General, despite the sanctioning of 5,588 single village schemes (SVS) worth Rs 816.30 crore, the government has completed just 3,618 (65%), spending Rs 183.38 crore. However, even in May 1,779 works (32%) had not started.

Officials concerned in May, 2017 stated that the works which were not started as on August 2014 were not taken up as per the instructions of the Finance Department. Experts TNIE spoke to said it was unfortunate ineffective administration had led to the loss of Central funds.
