GUNTUR:  Wife of a freedom fighter conducted fast in Tenali of Guntur district along with her daughter and son-in-law seeking allotment of patta to the housing land sanctioned to them under freedom fighters’ quota. However, Sundaramma, 91, called off her fast after revenue officials met her and promised to give her land patta in seven days. Movva Nagaiah of Jampani of Vemuru Mandal of Guntur district had participated in the Quit India movement.

After Nagaiah’s death, his wife Sundaramma applied for housing plot. After making rounds of government offices for many years by Sundaramma, officials agreed to sanction a housing plot to her in 2006. However, the officials did not issue any land patta despite repeated appeals. Vexed with the negligence, Sundaramma with daughter E Aruna Kumari and son-inlaw E Venkata Narayana started a ‘fast unto death’ at Dhrana Chowk at Tenali on Monday night. She said the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi presented Tamra Patra on 15 August 1972 to his husband. She stated that Nagaiah sacrificed all his wealth for the country.

The government sanctioned pension to her after his death. She applied for house site in 2006 and then Guntur tahsildar agreed to sanction 200 sq ft of land at Chowdavaram in 2006. However, the officials did not give the land patta till date which is essential to construct a house. Knowing about the fast, Tenali Revenue Divisional Officer G Narsimhulu and other revenue officials visited her. RDO Narsimhulu promised that Collector K Sasidhar would resolve the land issue in seven days and urged the trio to call the fast. She called off her fast after getting assurances from the officials.
