GUNTUR: A man was arrested for attempting to rape a minor girl at Kakumanu in Guntur on Tuesday. The police said the accused, in an inebriated state, took the eight-year-old victim to a thatched house where the rape attempt was made.

The accused, Komaragiri Lakshmaiah, had an extra-marital affair with the victim’s mother and was living with her, and her two children, for about a year in Nellore district, Bapatla DSP D Gangadharam said, adding they were visiting their relatives in Guntur district.

The DSP said mother and her relatives heard the victim screaming and rescued her and later lodged a complaint with the police against the accused.

A case was registered against the incident under the POCSO Act and Lakshmaiah was taken into custody. While the husband of victim’s mother had died two years ago, the accused was separated from his wife, the DSP informed. They worked in a farm land in Kovvuru and had briefly gone to Odisha, he said.
