TUMKUR: Three persons d were killed and five others were injured when a bus shelter collapsed due to heavy rain in Madhugiri town on Wednesday.

The deceased have been identified as Eshwarappa, 50, from  Garani village, Lakshmidevamma, 60, and Prameela, 50, from  Kempachinnenahalli village.The shelter near Raghavendra Swami Mutt was built by the municipality and the victims had taken shelter under it when it began raining. However, the shelter suddenly collapsed. The onlookers rescued the injured, who were stuck in the debris. The victims were shifted to the government hospital.

The vendors and public staged a protest condemning the municipality for constructing a shelter of poor quality. Assistant Commissioner C Anitha visited the spot and promised `1 lakh compensation to each of the deceased’s family.
