BELGAUM:  The Maharashtra government has refused to pressure the Union government to declare Belgaum a Union territory. The matter came to light here on Tuesday when a letter, dated July 5, 2011, written to B I Patil, former MLA and president of Belgaum taluk Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti, by the Maharashtra government was distributed by KRV activists.

The letter was signed by S M Inamadar, deputy secretary of Maharashtra government and states that it cannot pressureise the Centre until the dispute is resolved. The letter says, “Since Maharashtra approached the SC in April 2006 claiming the disputed areas, the demand for UT tag will have adverse effects.
