UDUPI: Director General of Police Shankar Bidari, on Thursday, visited Naxal affected region in Hebri, Karkala taluk and handed over a compensation of `3 lakh cash to Gopi, mother of Sadashiva Gowda, who was killed by Naxals in the forests of Thingalamakki near Kabbinale.

Bidari made the Karkala Deputy SP deposit the same in the Hebri Post Office and advised Gopi to draw its interest of Rs 2,050 per month for her livelihood.

Speaking to media persons, Bidari said that Maoist or Naxal movement into the state would never be successful. When asked whether the deceased, Sadasiva Gowda, was a police informer, Bidari said, “It is the duty of every citizen of this country to provide information about violence, illegal activities and criminals he is aware of to the police,” he said adding that, “We have gathered sufficient evidence to prove that Gowda was shot dead by Naxals.”

Bidari announced to recruit as many as 100 local youths in general, and tribals in particular, between the age group of 18-28, in to the Police Department.

He instructed police officials to recruit 30 youths from Karkala, Sringeri and Thirthahalli taluks and 10 youths from Belthangadi taluk immediately.

When asked whether they would be deployed to the Anti-Naxalite Force (ANF), Bidari said that initially they would be recruited to the Karnataka Police, and in due course of time considering their qualification, experience and contribution, they will be deployed to ANF.

Assistant Director General of Police (ADGP) Harshavardhan Raju, IGP Western Range Prathap Reddy, DIG (ANF) Alok Kumar, Udupi SP Ravi Kumar, Dakshina-Kannada SP Labu Ram and others were present.
