MANGALORE: Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) will launch a web-based system for regulation of radiation facilities across the country from June 2012, AERB Chairman SS Bajaj said on Thursday.
Addressing a gathering at the inaugural function of 30th IARP National conference, organised by Indian Association for Radiation Protection (IARP) in Mangalore University (MU), he said the system would help users to obtain early consent and AERB as a regulatory body can keep track on radiation facilities. A wide spread use of radiation facilities for applications like power generation and others doubled the risk of radiation exposure.
AERB chairman agreed that long term health effects of radiation continued to bother public after the nuclear accident at Fukushima in Japan. “The nuclear ambitions in India and abroad had suffered a setback,” he said. The radiation protection professionals need to be well-equipped with the know-how of design-specific requirements to monitor radiation safety, he added. The radiation protection should ensure protection to public and environment.
S S Bajaj and MU Vice-Chancellor Prof T C Shivashankara Murthy presented IARP awards to achievers in the field of radiation protection. Scientist UC Mishra received IARP lifetime achievement award while achievers TM Krishnamurthy, KC Pillai, PK Bhatnagar, S Murali, MP Rajan received KG Vohra memorial oration award, AK Ganguly memorial oration award, Nagarathnam R memorial award and P P Kamath radiation environmentalist awards respectively.
MU science department assistant professor Karunakara N was awarded the A K Ganguly felicitation prize and Challapalli Srinivas of Kasturba Medical College Hospital won the meritorious radiation safety officer award of IARP.
