Congress rubbishes BBMP’s claims

The Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) on Sunday launched an attack at the ruling BJP government and the Council of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) for failing to address the garbage issue.

Addressing a party rally on Sunday, Opposition Leader in the Assembly, Siddaramaiah lashed out at Deputy Chief Minister R Ashok and other BJP ministers. He alleged all the leaders had made crores of rupees for themselves at the cost of the state.

“The BBMP has taken a loan of Rs 1,000 crore  by pledging buildings like Jayanagar Complex and yet it cannot pay the salaries of pourakarmikas and owes Rs 2,000 crore to contractors. They have eaten all the money,” he said.

Stating that the Centre had given over Rs 80,000 crore to the state under various schemes, Siddaramiah demanded the state government give an account of this money.

“Just saying that the money has not come from Italy and is not Sonia Gandhi’s personal money is not enough. It is people’s money and they must give an account,” he said.

He further added that new developments under the JNNURM scheme was because of the Central Government. KPCC president G Parameshwar said, “They say that BBMP spends `600 crore in a year to dispose of garbage. Yet, all the garbage is on the streets. Where is the `600 crore that they have spent? You (BBMP) cannot provide services or give accounts of money spent. It must be dissolved or superseded.”

With the two major political functions in Padmanabhnagar on Sunday, residents and policemen had a harrowing time as the traffic was completely choked.

While the Congress opened a new office, the JD(S) held another function down the road thus leading to traffic jams.
